Two methods that look similar until you wash them a few times
From across a room, a screen-printed shirt and a DTG-printed shirt can look nearly identical. Get one in each hand and the difference becomes obvious fast - texture, weight of the ink layer, how the fabric moves under it. If you're ordering custom apparel, or just trying to understand what you're buying, the screen print vs DTG printing question is worth taking five minutes on.
How screen printing actually works
Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil - one stencil per color - directly onto the fabric. The ink sits on top of the fibers rather than bonding into them, which is why the finished print often has that slight raised feel you can run your finger over. For a simple two-color logo on 500 shirts, screen printing is the obvious choice: setup is labor-intensive (burning each screen, mixing inks, registering everything), but once you're running, the per-unit cost drops sharply.
The tradeoff is color count. Every additional color means another screen, another pass, more setup time. A photorealistic image with gradients and thirty shades is technically possible but gets expensive quickly. Screen printing is at its best with flat colors, clean edges, and designs that don't need to reproduce fine photographic detail.
Plastisol ink - the standard for most screen shops - is durable and holds color well, but it sits on the surface and can crack over years of washing if the cure wasn't done right. Water-based inks feel softer and absorb more into the fiber, but they require more careful curing and can fade faster on certain fabric blends.
How DTG works
DTG (direct-to-garment) printing is essentially an inkjet printer modified to handle fabric. The shirt sits flat on a platen, a print head passes over it, and ink is sprayed directly into the fibers. There's no screen setup, so a single shirt with a full-color photograph costs roughly the same to produce as a hundred shirts. That's the defining advantage - short runs, one-offs, complex artwork with as many colors as you want.
Before printing, most garments need a pretreatment solution applied and heat-pressed to help the ink bind. On white or light fabrics this is minimal; on dark fabrics the pretreatment layer is heavier and can leave a slight stiffness that softens after a few washes. This is the part DTG critics point to, and honestly it's a fair point - early DTG prints on black shirts felt almost plasticky, and some cheap operations still produce that result.
Modern DTG equipment (Kornit, Epson SureColor) has closed that gap considerably. A well-produced DTG print on a quality ring-spun cotton shirt, properly pretreated and cured, can feel softer than a thick screen print - but it depends heavily on the printer, the garment, and the operator's settings.
Hand-feel: the honest comparison
Screen printing with plastisol on a heavy cotton tee gives you a slightly raised, almost rubberized layer over the design area. Whether that's pleasant or not is genuinely subjective - some people associate it with a vintage, substantial feel; others find it uncomfortable against skin. Water-based screen printing is softer but still has some presence.
DTG on a good cotton shirt tends to feel more integrated - the ink is in the fiber rather than on it, so the print area moves with the garment instead of sitting on top. On polyester or poly-blend fabrics, DTG results are worse; the ink doesn't absorb well and the output can look washed out or feel streaky. Screen printing handles synthetic fabrics better.
Wash durability
This is where both methods get unfairly simplified. People say "screen printing lasts longer" as a rule, and it can - but a poorly cured plastisol print will start cracking after fifteen washes, while a properly produced DTG print on 100% cotton, washed inside-out in cold water, can hold up for years.
The honest answer is that wash durability depends more on ink quality, cure temperature, and care instructions than on the method itself. That said, for garments that will see heavy commercial use - workwear, uniforms, anything washed daily on a hot cycle - screen printing is generally the more forgiving choice. The ink deposit is thicker and the process is less sensitive to washing conditions.
For limited runs, personal pieces, or anything where the design is complex and the garment will be handled reasonably, DTG holds up fine. Wash cold, turn inside out, skip the dryer when you can. Same advice applies to screen-printed shirts, honestly.
Where each method fits
Screen printing makes sense when: you're printing 50+ pieces of the same design, the artwork uses a limited number of solid colors, and you want consistent results across a large run.
DTG makes sense when: you need one shirt or ten, the artwork is photographic or very detailed, or you're testing a design before committing to a bulk order.
And there's a middle ground that doesn't get talked about enough - hybrid shops that use DTG for prototyping and screen printing for production runs. If you're developing a product line, that workflow saves real money before you've locked in a design.
What about printed art for walls instead of fabric?
Slightly different territory, but the same underlying question - print method affects feel and longevity - applies to wall art too. Giclée inkjet printing on canvas or fine art paper uses archival pigment inks that hold color for decades under normal indoor conditions, which is part of why it's become the standard for canvas art prints worth owning. The ink saturation and resolution on a 30x40 canvas print is well above what either garment printing method produces, because the substrate is designed for it.
Anyway - back to shirts.
A few things neither camp tells you
Garment choice matters as much as print method. A 100% ring-spun cotton blank gives better results with DTG than a cheap poly-cotton blend, and better results with screen printing too. Shops that cheap out on blanks and blame the printing method when the result looks bad are not being straight with you.
Also, the "DTG fades faster" reputation is partly a legacy issue. Machines from ten years ago had real ink adhesion problems that current equipment mostly doesn't. If someone is citing DTG fade as a dealbreaker in 2024, ask when they last tested it on a current machine with current inks.
Neither method is wrong. They solve different problems, and the best printers know when to use which. If a shop pushes you toward one exclusively regardless of your order details, that's usually about their equipment investment, not your best result.
