The Exotic Shorthair was developed in the 1950s by crossing Persians with American Shorthairs to get the Persian's round face and calm temperament on a cat that does not require daily grooming. It worked almost too well - the Exotic Shorthair has the same flat face, round head, and plush coat as the Persian, but in a shorter, lower-maintenance version. It is sometimes called the "lazy man's Persian." The breed has been consistently popular in cat shows since it was recognized in the 1960s.
